Pembrokeshire 2024

Waves Shape

Nine of us headed off to sunny Pembrokeshire in July in 28 degrees. I was relieved the temperature dropped to 22 degrees by the time we got a Pembrokeshire as my celtic skin struggles with anything over 25 degrees.

On Saturday the weather was relatively calm but also relatively wet. Chucked it down while we were loading the boat but the determined group ploughed through and set up.

Anyway enough of the weather forecast!

Day 1

First dive – Was within the harbour so visibility was not quite as good ( I’m putting a positive slant on it!).

Second dive – Behar wreck was very enjoyable and visibility was much improved. You can see the cables spilling out onto the sea floor and I was particularly impressed with the huge boiler. The Behar lies just outside Dale is 436ft long by 57ft was carrying 4770 tons of government stores from Clyde to Milford Haven when she was hit by a German mine in Jan. 1936.

Plenty of time to have a nap and meet up for dinner in the marina.

Day 2

First dive – We dived Rye Rocks which was a lovely dive once I got out of the weeds. Loads of large spider crabs and Clive had a knack of spotting scallops.

Second dive – Junk rocks was a great wall dive. Saw 2 dog fish in first minute. Some divers saw lobsters and again loads of spider crabs with a wide array of fish life.

Weather was beautiful so we all headed off for an icecream in the marina ( becoming a bit of a tradition now), again all met up for an enjoyable meal in the Harbour Master.

Day 3

The wind had picked up quite a bit so I made sure I took a kwells just in case. The skipper said he would get out of the harbour and see what it was like. Well what can I say …. Roller coaster ride comes to mind. I certainly had to brace myself gripping onto the bench for dear life, particularly on the u turn. Having said that I quite enjoyed the experience but no diving was to be had.

Very popular consolation prize was another ice-cream in the marina under sunny skies.

Many thanks to Sally for organising the trip and well done to Alex and Paul who are new to UK sea diving. It was a safe and enjoyable diving weekend with a great bunch of club divers.
